After twenty years in the business world, Markus turned his life-long hobby of bird watching and photography into a full-time profession in 2005. Since then, he has been awarded in numerous nature photography competitions. The highlight so far was winning second place in 2014 in the Nature category in the world’s most prestigious photo contest, World Press Photo Contest. The GDT European Wildlife Photographer Award in Birds Category in 2011 was another milestone.
Markus has published several books. His first international bestseller, Birds: Magic Moments, was published in the UK in 2011 in 6 languages and no less than 43,000 copies.
Markus is a co-founder of the website birdphoto.fi, a unique platform combining the work of four competing nature photographers. It offers editors, photo researchers, and anyone interested a library of bird photos. The site has about 800,000 main page hits each year.
Relentlessly pursuing the best composition, the ideal light, the graceful marriage of subject and setting; hunting for good colours, contrast, angle, and sharpness: these are the essential building blocks for Markus’ images.
