Born in Cologne in 1966, Thorge Berger’s creative path began with music. After studying musicology, German and English language and literature, he first built a career in the music industry before surrendering to another lifelong rhythm: travel and photography.
For more than four decades, Thorge has explored the world with a camera in hand, working across over 50 countries on five continents. His imagery is driven by curiosity – a deep desire not just to see a place, but to understand it. During a shared journey through India, American photographer Steve McCurry once remarked, “Thorge has a real passion for his photography and a tireless curiosity to explore this amazing world we live in.” That spirit of exploration continues to define his work today.
His photographs are known for their cinematic intensity and powerful sense of atmosphere. In 2013, he was named “Grenzgang Photographer of the Year” by Fotoforum magazine, with publisher Martin Breutmann praising the spectacular visual language of his work from Bhutan, India and Nepal — highlighting his refined composition and mastery of form, colour and space.
Since 2012, Thorge has brought his images to life on stage through professional live multimedia presentations, alongside workshops, seminars and curated photography journeys. His presentation IRAN – Hidden Beauty earned third place at the renowned El Mundo Festival in 2021. In 2025, Magical INDIA was awarded first prize for Best Presentation at the same festival, as well as the award for Best Photography – a testament to his storytelling and visual craft.
Beyond the stage, Thorge serves on the board of the GBV (Gesellschaft für Bild und Vortrag), supporting and connecting professional lecturers across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. His photographs and articles appear regularly in leading travel and photography publications, and his books – including his acclaimed guide to travel photography – continue to inspire a new generation of visual explorers.
We are proud to welcome Thorge Berger as a MrJan Gear ambassador – a photographer whose experience, vision and relentless curiosity embody the spirit of exploration our gear is built for.
