When we think of nature photography, we mostly imagine vast, remote landscapes. But nature’s beauty can be surprisingly close to the city. In many urban areas, the boundaries between nature and city life blend seamlessly. Photographer Oscar Dominguez sent us some stunning images of Munich, a city he knows like the back of his hand.
While most people associate Munich with beer gardens and historic architecture, nature thrives just beyond its urban landscape in fascinating ways. Oscar regularly explores these hidden wonders regularly, capturing stunning wildlife and landscapes. “Munich sits on the banks of the Isar River, about 100 km north of the Bavarian Alps. The city is surrounded by a broad plain dominated by farmland, interspersed with small areas of mixed forest. Within an hour’s drive, there are numerous wetlands, and the mountains are accessible on a day trip.”
Oscar’s love for nature photography draws him to several cities where urban and natural worlds merge, but he considers Munich a gem. “Compared to other cities, Munich is rich in biodiversity not only because of its geographical location but also due to the conservation and protection of its natural ecosystems. Numerous projects promote respect for nature within the city. As a result, censuses show impressive figures: more than 800 plant species (from ferns to flowering plants), over 110 species of breeding birds, around 60 species of butterflies, 32 species of grasshoppers, and nearly 200 species of bees.”
Nymphenburg Palace Park: A Hidden Sanctuary
“To me, nature photography in and around cities is about finding beauty in unexpected places,” says Oscar. “The parks, rivers, and natural spaces around Munich offer incredible opportunities for photographers, all while remaining close to urban life. It’s a chance to photograph two different worlds: the heart of the city and the edges of the Alps.”
Oscar’s favorite spot for nature photography is Nymphenburg Palace Park, just outside Munich’s busy streets. “It’s one of the best places to observe Bavaria’s most common birds. Over 200 bird species can be found, an impressive number for just 200 hectares. The park is particularly important for waterfowl and forest birds. It’s a combination of ancient trees, meadows, and lakes – a truely peaceful environment.”
In early spring, the park is especially vibrant, Oscar says. “The birds are active, and the mixed forests, with ancient trees and an abundance of dead wood, provide nesting sites for cavity-dwelling species such as woodpeckers, owls, and bats.
You can also see roe deer, which have inhabited the park since the 18th century when it was a royal hunting ground. The park also hosts an impressive variety of dragonflies, with 27 species recorded—more than a third of all species found in Bavaria.”
The River in the City’s Heart
Not far from the city center is the Isar River, a unique spot – especially in the morning. “The Isar in the morning light is magical,” says Oscar. “It’s a place where the riverbanks are full of wildlife, and you can capture interesting birds like the kingfisher and white-throated dipper – all while hearing the hum of the city in the distance.
Even in the heart of the city, nature thrives. Birds, insects, and small mammals can be found in the Englischer Garten, which stretches along the northern bank of the river and is one of Munich’s largest and most famous green spaces. The water of the Isar feeds two canals that flow through the park, creating a beautiful environment.
