Craft, Quality, and Sustainability

At Mr Jan Gear, every backpack, hide, and travel accessory is crafted by hand in our Slovakian workshop, not far from where Jan lives. This is where experience, skill, and passion come together to create gear that performs in the toughest outdoor conditions.

Leading this effort is Martin Suchan, our designer and production expert who oversees every stage from prototyping to final assembly. He works closely with Marta Moodova, our pattern-making and prototyping specialist, and our team of skilled sewers and fabric cutters. Together they ensure that every stitch and seam meets the highest standards.

Our Workshop in Action

From initial sketches to the final stitch, every product is crafted with care and precision. Under Martin’s guidance, our team transforms designs into durable, field-ready gear — combining expertise, quality, and a passion for the outdoors. Here’s how it happens:

  1. Design & Pattern Making: Each product starts on paper (and screen). Dimensions, materials, and functionality are carefully specified.
  2. Cutting & Sewing: Skilled hands cut fabrics with precision and sew them into prototypes. Every seam is inspected for strength and alignment.
  3. Assembly & Quality Control: The finished product is assembled, tested, and refined until it meets our rigorous standards.
  4. Feedback Loop: Products are shared with ambassadors and field testers. Suggestions are incorporated into the next batch.

Why Europe?

Producing locally isn’t just a choice — it’s a philosophy:

  • Close to customers: Being nearby allows us to gather feedback, iterate quickly, and improve our products based on real-world testing.
  • Sustainable: Shorter shipping routes reduce transport emissions and lower the environmental impact compared to sourcing from the Far East.
  • Support local economy: By keeping production in Europe, we create jobs, invest in local skills, and strengthen our community.
  • Flexible production: Small-batch manufacturing lets us adapt quickly, experiment with new ideas, and keep waste low.

By producing locally, we maintain full control over quality and can respond to photographers’ needs faster than global brands. Every backpack or hide is not just made in Europe — it’s made to last, reflecting decades of outdoor expertise.
